The years before Mao Zedong launched the Cultural Revolution also called as “peasant’s revolution” which wanted to address social struggle and decrease economic inequality. Mao Zedong believed in socialism as the main solution to the adversities that the country is facing, most especially the poverty and great divide between its people. This theory focuses on the production, exchange, and distribution means being regulated and controlled by the community as one, which gives rise to communism. It was also said to be a way of Mao Zedong to regain his power against the Communist party, by using the people of the nation. Prior to the revolution, it was a time of warlords, massacres, and colonialism, resulting to poverty and death among the civilians.
Both the reading and the movie have shown the effects of the revolution and drastic change to the lives of the people, especially the civilians. Reconstruction and purging of the old ways were done to give rise to the ideal country and new practices which were believed to save the current state of the nation. In the efforts of bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, some consequences have happened. Lands were taken from landlords and the rich people, then was redistributed to the common people in poverty. Those landlords and rich people faced death or had to flee for their safety. For a “better” nation, many lives were affected, involving a lot of pain and torture to acknowledge Mao Zedong as the leader and most powerful. His teachings and paragraphs were given so much importance and people are obligated to show reverence to him and those people and things that are connected to him.
