The years 1763-1776 were a time of volatile political and social challenges for the North American Colonies. One of the main factors that influenced the dynamics between great Britain and its colonies was the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The French and Indian war in North America or the Seven Year war was finally ended by the signing of the treaty. Because of this, France moved their troops from North America except New Orleans in order to keep their hold on the Caribbean Sugar Islands. Britain acquired plenty of territories in the east of the Mississippi River, while Spain holds some territories in the West Mississippi. However, in the treaty, Spain gave away East and West Florida and took Cuba.
In the same year, George III banned settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains. He decided this because of his concern in defending the colonies. Local native Americans also had a strong presence and posed a threat to the interest of the colonies. This pushed the 13 colonies to have a claim and an exclusive right to govern the lands situated to the west area from their bases
Another big factor regarding the tensions between Great Britain and the American colonies was the sugar act of 1964. This was actually an attempt to create funding for the security of the colonies by the British government. The government wanted to discourage smuggling and wanted to up the production and distribution of British rum. They lowered the taxes on molasses, while a levy was placed on foreign products such as Madeira wine and colonial exports of raw material. British customs first had to examine and inspect cargos of products and resources such as wood, iron, and other minerals. The sugar act established a vice-admiralty court in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which took on smuggling cases and sentenced people without a jury and with the presumption of guilt.
