Representations and the appearance of African-American characters in film and popular media has focused on stereotypes that paint blacks in a negative light and Jim Crow caricatures have reinforced these stereotypes. Stereotypes of African Americans reflect people’s attitudes and beliefs about blacks in the US and since they were vilified, it shows that this was one way to support how they were treated and their rights and freedoms being infringed. The Brute and Sapphire caricatures are examples of blacks being depicted negatively for their supposed features and behaviors, and they also justify Jim Crow and minimize the impact of Jim Crow practices.
The Brute caricature perpetuates of racial stereotypes and reinforces racist images that blacks/ African Americans are prone to use violence and are savages. This is especially young men and in the modern context this has been linked to violent crime. These brute caricatures were most common during Reconstruction and were used to instill fears that blacks had ‘animalistic tendencies’ that needed to be contained (Ferris State University). The different caricatures are linked to perpetuating racist beliefs and some were used to justify segregation and the Jim Crow laws. The images reflect the social reality in art, but they also mask the hardships that African Americans went through during the Jim Crow era and segregationist policies that limited their opportunities (Smith, 2018).
The Sapphire caricature shows the appearance of African-American women as overbearing, loud and abrasive people is also common in the stereotypes of Angry Black Woman (ABW).
