Statement of Purpose by the National Organization for Women
During the 1960s, women, young and old started to fight for what they believed, their roles and rights in the American society. This was influenced and inspired by the Civil Rights Movement who forbid discrimination in employment on the basis of gender. Men had better chances to fulfill their potential to the fullest, unlike women. Political and social forces discriminated women, thus posing a challenge to the feminist movements that fought for the women’s rights. An association known as the National Organization for Women published a statement of purpose that revealed goals and tactics of the feminist movements. The organization purposed to fight for the women's rights in the society.
The organization was founded in 1966 by a group of feminists to take actions to bring about equality for all women in the society (National Organization for Women., 1966). The organization’s major goal was to attempt to eliminate discrimination, promote feminist morals, lead societal change, to achieve equality, and protect the rights of all women and girls in all aspects of political, social and economic life. The organization achieved its goals through lobbying work, rallies, and pickets. Through its actions, the organization helped increase employment, and implementation of tough measures against violence, agitations, and discrimination of women. The main objective of the association was to oversee that women's right were respected, and that women have an opportunity to explore their talents maximally. Originally, the organization’s purpose was to bring women into a forum where they exercised and participated equally in roles and responsibilities with the men in the society.
As indicated in the statement of purpose, the founders of the organization flourished to break through the silken curtain of prejudice and discrimination against women in the government, employment sector, family, religion and the image of a woman in general. The National Organization for Women (NOW) worked on specific goals such as amendment of Equal Rights Amendments (ERA). For example, following the statement of purpose written by Friedan, the program focused on declaring NOW’s goal to give women an opportunity to participate in various activities in American so as to enjoy the same privileges as the men in the society. At a conference in 1966, the organization agreed on further "targets for action", which included equal employment for women, educational opportunities, social equality to both genders, and changed the image of women from being stereotypical. This addressed the problem of unequal treatment towards women, which denied them fair opportunities to maximally exploit their potentials among other people in the society (Barakso, 2004).
On November 1966, the board held a press conference to announce on the existence of the group and their purpose in New York City and another conference was held in Washington, D.C, in January 1972.
