Sport and Church History Essay Research Paper Coursework

Essay Instructions:

I will only need the essay proposal that will 1-2 pages long. Once I get feedback from the teacher, I will contact you again so that you can start with the actual 25 pages essay.
I would like the essay to talk about a sport & church in the 1940s

Your proposal indicates a preliminary start with the primary sources
but the poster and final paper will have to
incorporate a lot more
than you have listed here. You should keep
searching for more and as
you do your reading and research, you should
find more in authors'
footnotes and references.
You need not send me another revision of the proposal. Please now get on with the reading and research.

As a start, even before that, you could investigate Google Scholar online and type in a word search:
"Catholic Church and sports Chicago"
Here is one relevant book, a secondary source,
which you should read
and look at the footnotes to discover the
primary sources that the
chapter contributors used:
https://books.aooale.com/books/about/
Sports in Chicago.html?id=iY6BK0FZS-EC
The issue is to locate primary sources that are accessible to you
online and/or are in the library at York.
Without using extensive primary sources, this research paper will not receive a passing grade.

Sport and Church
Your revised proposal contains a more focused topic for the research
paper and it seems to be a manageable one. However, the purpose of the proposal was to get students also to search for primary sources
that would serve as the main content of the paper, along with
secondary sources that would provide the
background context and
history.
What you have sent me here indicates that you might have a feasible
topic, and it is certainly interesting, but it still does not provide
a list of primary sources that would provide assurance that the essay can be written based on those sources. The items you list are
secondary sources. It is necessary for you to find items that were
written during the time period this essay aims to treat, 1890s to
1930s. To do this, you should search the York Library catalogue. You
might consider contacting Scott McLaren, the librarian for History
with whom we had the library research seminar, for some assistance.

Re: Sport and ChurchPrimary sources are the most important
element of a History research
paper. Your proposal has the framework for
approaching your topic but
you must have primary sources. You should
read the secondary sources
to understand how the attitudes of the Catholic
Church towards sport
and the body developed and were expressed as a start, but you will
have to find and use the primary sources.
Remember, too, that the
essay has to deal with North America —
Canada and the United States.

Step 1: Essay Proposal—Due: Jan. 14, 2020
The proposal should consist of a 1 -page outline of your topic and a list of primary research sources and key secondary sources that provide context for the research topic. Proposals will be returned in class on Jan. 21, with comments as to their feasibility and, if necessary, suggestions for refining the approach and sources. At that time, a schedule for the poster sessions will be provided. They will be arranged thematically in order to facilitate discussion.
Step 2: Poster Sessions and Discussions: March 3, March 10, March 17 2020
Step„3: Final Research Paper -Due: March 31,2020: IN CLASS. No extensions are permitted.
The final paper should be 25 double-spaced pages (in 12pt font), and must include proper footnotes and a bibliography. Bibliography and footnotes are part of the 25-page length requirement. History students must use the University of Chicago format for footnotes and bibliography; Humanities students may use the MLA or APA format Note: bibliographical sources should have separate listings (in alphabetical order) as follows: 1) primary sources: including archival sources, documents, government reports, articles etc; 2) secondary sources: separate listings (in alphabetical order) of articles and books.
Please include a self-addressed, self-stamped envelope when you submit your paper in order that it can be returned to you by mail. Papers cannot be left in department reception areas for pick-up.

Objectives of the proposal
The aim of this proposal is to describe the development of sports in the catholic faith in the 1890s to 1940s. The body and soul were perceived as two different entities which prohibited the development of sports because the body was sinful. As a result, this proposal addresses the sinful nature of the body while also describing how the change in that narrative facilitated the development of sports.
Background description
The history of the Catholic Church in the 19th and early 20th only perceived the human body negatively because it was associated with evil or sin. This opinion led to the belief that the human body will always be inferior to the soul and spirit (Bebbington, 2003). However, in his Encyclical Letter of 1891, Pope Leo XIII encouraged the establishment of Catholic Sports Organizations, which would use sporting activities to develop the youth. This resulted into a drastic change in the Catholic calendar. The church allowed holydays and ancient festive periods to be used as an opportunity to engage in peasant games. However, there was still some opposition from some believers who argued that the competitive nature of sports undermined the calm nature of the soul. To quell the opposition against sports, Pope Pius X11 established the “New Approaches and Educational Strategies for Sporting Environments” in 1939. The approaches indicated that “while respecting the autonomy of each institution, the Church and Catholic sports associations, must find more and more ways of collaborating with the entire international sports movement in pursuing those same general goals that favor the development of the human person, especially the youth” (Constatini, 2011).
According to Prebish (1993), the successful incorporation of sports into the Catholic Church in the early part of the 20th century was supported by the comprehension of;
