A Brief Summary and Timeline of the History of the US Constitution
The US Constitution is a document, which outlines the basis of the national government of the country. It was written in the year 1787 at the Constitutional Convention that was held in Philadelphia. The Constitution was approved in the year 1788 by nine states, replacing the Articles of Confederation, which was the earlier set of government rules. The Articles of Confederation created a national congress that was weak and had neither an executive nor a judicial branch.
In the year 1791, the first 10 amendments (bill of rights) were added to the Constitution of United States. In 1865, Amendment 13 was added to the constitution that abolished slavery. Amendment 14 was included in the year 1868 that highlighted the rights of citizenship to all people in the USA. Amendment 15 was added in the year 1870 that gave people the right to vote regardless of color, and race. Amendment 16 was added in the year 1913 for income tax. In the year 1992, Amendment 27 was included in the U. S. Constitution.
