Initially, indentured servants served as the primary labor force of the American colonies (Corbett, Janssen, Lund, Pfannestiel, & Vickery, 2017). However, as the labor intensive crops, such as tobacco, rice, indigo, coffee, and cotton rise in demand in the American markets, the diminishing number of indentured servants can no longer meet the demands of production and intended to raise the level of immigration to the colony (Corbett et al., 2017; Galenson, 1981). Additionally, the price of employing indentured servant’s increases over time as the skill required in production is increasing in demand. The producers knew that the success of these products is dependent on the availability of skillful workers that can endure the exhausting demand of physical labor. The American colonies addressed this issue by finding a way to create a more lasting labor supply (Galenson, 1981). They turned to the African laborers to fill the ranks of the workers of the large plantations in the Americas. The Africans were chosen as they already are skilled in animal husbandry and farming; also, the skin color of Africans can be easily identified and segregated from the natives of the land. Furthermore, the African slave trade can easily provide laborers to satisfy the needs of production in the American colonies. Although the American colonies solved the shortage of laborers in their plantations, the American colonies developed a new slavery system that permanently marks the lineage of these African laborers as slaves, where the status of a slave is eternal and inherited. Therefore, in the Americas, slavery became a permanent social class, race based and children born from slave parents will become slaves as well (Corbett et al., 2017).
