“Why I'm Ready for More Slavery Films,” Response
Mychal Denzel Smith, in his article "Why I'm Ready for More Slavery Films," in The Nation Magazine, argues that he would love to see more films on slavery. He wishes to view such videos not to enjoy the brutalization of blacks in the movies but as part of the process of creating an American cultural memory. He argues that cinema is a powerful tool that commands a broader audience than books. It is, therefore, an instrument for Americans, especially the current generation, to learn about the institution of slavery as it was in the past. The author wants people to have a deeper understanding of slavery as it occurred, how it operated, the person who gave it a lifeline and finally how it came to an end. He is against forgetting about it and moving on.
