Introduction
In today’s competitive world, everyone is free to share his thoughts via different platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others. But from the 16th to 19th centuries, a large number of people were enslaved by wealthy “masters.” Some of them mistreated them and left them helpless in uncertain situations, while the others even killed their slaves on the name of religion or the so-called power/self-respect. Today’s youth might have no idea how rudely the slaves used to be treated centuries ago. But to make things clear, Josephine Brown mentions in “A Biography of An American Bondman by His Daughter” that her father (William Wells Brown) went through tough times and was kept in captivity for years (Brown).
Born in November 1884, near Lexington, Kentucky, William Wells emerged as a prominent African-American novelist, historian, playwright, and lecturer. His father (George Higgins) and his mother (Elizabeth) were enslaved in their times. In 1834, William Wells Brown escaped slavery and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Throughout his life, he worked for abolition and raised his voice against the cruelty of the superiors. He was a big supporter of temperance, pacifism, anti-tobacco movements, prison reform and women’s suffrage, and this urged the rivals to capture William Wells and punish him severely (Brown).
Places of Enslavement
While in Europe, William Wells wrote “Clotel” in which he shared his thoughts about freedom and its significance in life. He believed that slavery had become a trend in the United States and that people might never get the freedom of opinion or a chance to live their lives according to their own terms. Eventually, he was erased because the superiors were afraid of his mentality and the way he shared his thoughts with the world. However, Brown came back into existence when the civil rights movement was initiated. He spent a large part of his childhood in slavery, in Missouri, but when William Wells reached his 19, he was sold to one of the Mississippi River steamboat owners (Brown).
While in Cincinnati, William Wells managed to escape and traveled to Ohio to get settled in his life. But this journey was not so easy because he had to travel by foot, in the winter season when snowfall was common all over the world. According to Josephine Brown, the father risked his life in those days. He kept moving toward the north and was briefly settled in Boston before reaching Ohio. As a fugitive slave and a black guy, William Wells knew the worth of freedom, and he wrote different short stories regarding how important it is to live life freely. He believed that if one wanted freedom, he might like to move to either Canada or England because freedom was considered a big crime in America (Brown).
Work and Family
At the age of 20, he tied the knot with Elizabeth Schooner, and they were blessed with two daughters, Josephine and Clarissa. In 1851, Elizabeth Schooner breathed her last while in the United States, but unlike various other newborn girls, their daughters survived to adulthood.
