English Settlers
The English settlers viewed Native Americans as primitive and their enemies. Thus, they focused on enslaving or eradicating them, including taking their lands for settlement. (Granbury ISD, n.d.). Boys and young men were among the first English settlers. However, over time women, children and families arrived. It was almost 50% of male and female English settlers came intending to settle. They needed land that Native Americans already occupied. Even as English settlers traded furs, fish, and timber, it was not on a large scale, and they mainly focused on self-sufficiency (the University of Massachusetts, n.d). Of the three groups, English settlers interacted less with the Native Americans, and puritan women were not expected to interact with Natives in any way. English settlers enjoyed more freedom and governance than French and Spanish settlers as European rulers who exercised absolute power (Granbury ISD, n.d.).
There were plantations and family farms among the English settlers, depending on where they settled. As the English considered the Natives inferior, they took their land, and settlers enslaved natives, but on a small scale compared to Africans. There were fractured relations between the English and the natives as the settlers required more land for settlement and forcibly drove out the natives. They also interfered with their cultures and economic way of life.
The Spanish settlers
The Spanish settlers first established sugar plantations in the new world and used the Native population for hard labor. The Spanish mainly remained in clustered settlements where there were strict water and land use (the University of Massachusetts, n.d). The Spanish crown influenced the pattern of Spanish immigration and exercised greater control over the Spanish settlements.
