Goals:
Your mission is to create an imaginary virtual periodical (such as a newspaper or magazine) from a time between 1400 and 1800. You can also choose a little earlier time to cover the so-called Black Death (1347-51). You can write imaginative stories that mix fact and fiction (but be within the realm of possibility)
Focus your periodical around one of the major topics or movements from the course (such as women in early modern times, the Renaissance, the Conquest, exploration, Reformation, printing, minorities, French Revolution, Enlightenment, etc).
ALL members of the class must check with the instructor about the topic and possible readings
Choose a specific year (or even day) and location for your newspaper that you believe reflects an important moment in time. You can include events from around 50 years on either side of the date but the closer the better.
Include different aspects of the topic (perhaps how it affected different social groups) while creating a coherent picture of the movement/topic with a particular perspective
Mix fact and fiction (you could imagine the life of a villager, townsperson, or imagine a reporter interviewing someone, all kinds of possibilities)
750 to 1000 words in length with at least four to five stories
One lead story should be at least 250 words in length (One page double-spaced)
Give your stories some depth (explain people’s perspectives, motivations and context)
Include at least one image and create a story about it (find the image on one the following websites (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Louvre Museum, British Museum or British Library, or of course Bobst Library (NYU) & think of a related story

Recommendations: Have fun and be creative while keeping your stories plausible. Think of giving your periodical different sections on a variety of topics, such as politics, culture (books, music, art), sports, the economy, biographies, fashion, interviews, etc. Then create stories about people, trends and events of the era, that are likely to have happened. Write it like a magazine—not an encyclopedia—with details about events that reflect larger trends. Periodicals do not read like textbooks which summarize long periods or give straight factual biographies or histories of wars, etc. In other words you should highlight a timely aspect of a person, or topic, in a way that fits into your view of the period. Please give your stories some depth, such as by providing the context explaining why something happened and who or what it affected. This is a work of the imagination which should mix both ‘fact’ and fantasy.
Please avoid writing about major historical figures covered in class (such as Luther or Columbus). Instead find out about other figures or create imaginary figures involved in an event. You could include the perspective of an Aztec warrior on the conquest, or a couple going through marital problems (a la Hans Sachs). Try to create stories that reflect larger themes. This assignment allows you to offer your own distinct perspective on the past. The lifestyle of peasants and nobles during the Renaissance period
The transformation from the Middle Ages to Renaissance contributed to significant changes in the daily life of the average person. Ideally, the people started enjoying more luxuries such as nice clothes, better food and improved art. Besides, the transition between the two periods also maintained and supported the social classes among the members of society. For instance, the peasants and the nobles maintained significantly different lifestyles. Ideally, the food of a peasant farmer would mainly comprise of soup and would also rely on black bread for survival. The soup would be made from vegetables such as carrots. The peasants would not afford expensive foods such as meat.
Further, the renaissance period facilitated the development of artisans, merchants and artisans who developed into middle-class people who had money although they were not regarded as nobles. The life of the merchants was much better as compared to the peasants. Wealthy individuals enjoyed huge feasts and easily acquired fancy dishes. Although the nobles took soup, it was made with exotic spices, and unlike the peasants, the rich enjoyed large roasts of beef. It is essential to comprehend that certain food items such as the soups were made based on the social class of the people. Among the wealthy, soups were very expensive, and since they were made from different colors, sweetened with sugars and put aromatic herbs (Renaissance-spell, 2011). Feasts were also conducted during festivals and occasions such as weddings where both the poor and wealthy would enjoy various types of foods, including fruits, nuts and meat.
Life as a painter during the Renaissance period
Artwork produced by artists in the renaissance peopled significantly portrayed the changes associated with the changing period. For example, the painters started creating pieces of art that comprised a realistic portrayal of the human body and the landscape. A painter within this time had shifted from stylization and embraced a more naturalistic approach that was ideal for depicting humans and the architecture. Furthermore, painting at this time was more focused on learning, and the curiosity facilitated by the new forms of art made the painters learn and contribute to the formation of greater paintings. For example, a painter was required to get creative through practice to deliver painting through a three-dimensional look.
