Before the mid-twentieth century, the world was mainly made up of empires that ruled over the European, Asian, American, and African continents. The origins of empire rule can be traced back to 2350 B.C.E when Sargon of Akkad united various city-states in Mesopotamia (Doyle, 1986). Multiple rulers would later copy Sargon's idea for the next 4,000 years. The most renowned empires include the Persian Empire, the Roman Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. The Roman Empire emerged as Persian and Greek power faded in the west. Despite being revolutionary, the Roman Empire did, however, fail eventually. The Ottoman Empire remained a force to reckon with until the twentieth century (Aldrich & McKenzie, 2019). Between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, kingdoms grew in number leading to a deviation from the world empire. However, in 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte re-introduced the term with his coronation as emperor of France.
Empires were formed by conquering new lands, and their reach determined their strength and power (Doyle, 1986). For instance, before Alexander the Great became King of Macedonia, the Persian Empire was the most powerful and most extensive empire the world had ever seen. Despite the empire occupying all of Asia, its kings still sought to conquer new kingdoms in the west to expand the empire's reach. Although none of the Persian Kings achieved this, the idea remained relevant during this time. When Rome shifted from a republic and into an empire, it also revolutionized the way empires were formed and governed.
