THE RED SUMMER (1919)
The red summer refers to the chain of race riots that took place between May and October of 1919. Although these riots took place in twenty-six cities throughout the United States, the most affected cities were Elaine, Washington DC, Chicago and Arkansas. Migration of blacks to the south and the influenza epidemic that killed so many people in 1918 led to widespread instability. These events led to racial tension among the people in the United States There was more tension on the city south side this is because so many black people lived there.
The first act of violence was witnessed in May 1919 at Charleston, South Carolina, where a black man pushed a white sailor, and immediately a group of white people gathered together to chase the black man. The black man hides in a nearby house where the white crowd caught up with him. It was at this point another black man fired up to dismiss the crowd. It was later rumored that a black man fired shots at a white sailor (Tuttle, 1970). On July 19, riots erupted in Washington, DC between whites and blacks. White men initiated a riot after a black man was accused of rape. The white men beat random black men. They even pulled them out of streetcars. Black humanity fought back after local police force refused to intervene. On July 27 white people destroyed black people homes and business in Chicago. Lastly, one of the most intense race riots took place at Elaine, Arkansas on October 1 after whites tried to break up the organization efforts of black's sharecroppers. During these riots, over 100 blacks and five whites were killed.
