Marlene Rodriguez was born in California at Colton town. She joined the United States army in 2003 at the age of 23. As an army personnel, she was part of the troops deployed to Iraq in 2005. This was a war on terrorism after the perceived Middle East attack on U. S that led to the 11/9/2001 bombing. While on duty as a heavy wheel vehicle operator, an improvised explosive device injured Marlene’s vehicle. This led to the death of her passenger and her sustaining brain injury. The injury did not prevent Marlene from serving her country in Iraq as an army. After medication, she was deployed again in 2007 as a truck commander. The 2007 was her third deployment and became the last operation for her in Iraq. During this operation, she was again hit by an explosive device that caused a seizure disorder. She was evacuated, treated and honorably retired in 2009 due to medical condition CITATION Gre13 \l 1033 (Kovach, 2013).
Despite her injuries, Marlene continued with her studies. Her persistence service and loyalty to U.S army and state made her be crowned as the first woman to receive the prestigious purple heart award. Purple Heart is a national organization based on state service specifically to honor the combat-wounded troops.
