Due to the mounting pressure caused by protests from hundreds of thousands of the people of Puerto Rico, Governor Ricardo Rosselló was left with no option but to resign. The protest which took place for twelve days involved mass engagement, strikes, and blockage of main avenues which lead to San Juan CITATION Ale19 \l 1033 (Campbell, 2019). The demonstrations emerged following a series of social media scandals and corruption cases that rocked the Governor’s administration.
The unearthing of the Governor’s rote and that of his administration painted a lousy impression not only on the Governor and his crew but also that of the entire government. To begin with, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had made two significant arrests from Ricardo Rosselló’s government CITATION Ale19 \l 1033 (Campbell, 2019). The FBI had arrested Julia Keleher, the former Education Secretary and the former chief of Health Insurance Administration of Puerto Rico, Ángela Ávila-Marrero CITATION San19 \l 1033 (Plácido, 2019). The officials were linked with mishandling 15.5 million dollars which they are alleged to have channeled the money meant to fund government projects to their businesses.
The second scandal emerged when investigative officers in Puerto Rico unearthed leaked telegram text messages between the Governor and his close allies ridiculing his political opponents and joking about the victims of Hurricane Maria CITATION Ara19 \l 1033 (Aranda & Rosa, 2019).
