The Meiji Restoration marked the beginning of a new phase in the Japanese history: a time when the Shoguns decided to terminate their differences and framed rational policies on the best method to interact with Europeans. The majority, especially those people who maintained a close working relationship with the emperor, opted to use the ruler's influence in binding coherence among the samurai in Japan and to ensure successive changes in the Emperor’s name (Ravina, 2017). Shoguns believed that learning the scientific knowledge from Western powers was vital so that in the end, they could comfortably remove the Europeans from Japan. Shoguns further noticed that in order to achieve the mission of removing the west from Japan they needed to persuade the samurai, who were furiously hostile to the Westerners. This meant that the undertaking would best be done in the name of the Emperor as compared to a shogun or samurai. Meiji Restoration marked the final ousting of the Tokugawa Emperor and a transition of the leadership to a youthful Meiji Emperor. Notably, the new Emperor was a point of interest in Japanese governmental affairs. In the background a section of pro-emperor samurai were actively legislating and implementing policies in the country (Ravina, 2017). This paper discusses the Meiji Restoration in Japan, giving consideration to its historical importance in different aspects of Japanese governance like politics, religion and philosophy and social significance. Further, a discussion on the role of the Meiji Restoration in influencing the East Asian nations is included .
The significance of the Meiji Restoration Event
The Meiji Restoration defined the genesis towards the termination of feudalism in Japan. The restoration oversaw the rise of the modern Japanese culture, governmental affairs, and the community. The event was a turning point in the development of the national essence movement in Japan. The Japanese were able to restrain from the influence of Western culture. The development of the national essence ensured that the country maintains her conservative culture that the western powers had started diluting with the friendly and the collaborative nature of the then Tokugawa leadership to the westerners.
The restoration event further gave rise to the Meiji Constitution drafted in 1889. Relatively, the constitution mirrored the Japanese political developments (Wert, 2013). The constitution in all of its rules and guidelines clearly denoted the distinction between Japan's constitutional monarchy government and the monarchical government of England in a measure of the powers and privileges given to their respective Emperors. This clause was defined in the constitution as powers bestowed on the Emperor and on the two houses.
