Introduction
In this book "Looking Backward", Edward Bellamy tries to imagine a perfect human society that would exist in the future. Besides, during the 19th century, the time when Bellamy wrote this book, things were not easy since the United States had been in a civil war, violent uprisings over the formation of unions, as well as an economic depression (Bellamy, 1996). For this reason, Bellamy portrayed a society where human beings stopped suffering any serious harm or inconveniences from climatic changes. Certainly, I would love to live in Bellamy’s utopia and enjoy a perfect life with nothing to worry about.
Living in Edward Bellamy’s Utopia
Indeed, living in Bellamy's utopia portrayed in "Looking Backward," would be a dream come true for anyone who wants to live in a fair society and have a good life. In the book, the author made his main character Julian West to travel to the future year of 2000 (Bellamy, 1996). In that year, all the various situations that were a burden to human beings like wars, economic issues, injustices, unhappy marriages, as well as other social problems, did not exist. All mentioned problems would cease to exist due to socialism among humans. Besides the public ownership of production, everyone would readily access their needs as suggested by Bellamy. More so, Bellamy's utopia is not driven by social status, but all human beings in society get the same and fair treatment.
Admittedly, living in Bellamy’s utopia, mean a world where there is no racial or gender segregation. Women would have equal rights as men represented in the government with veto powers, especially when it comes to making the final decisions on laws that affect women ...
