This ninety-minute documentary has been presented by Robert Reich and is available in form of DVD and distributed inexpensively throughout the country and available online at Netflix. Robert Reich is one of the renowned economists of the United States and had served for the Federal Government during Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and as Secretary for Labor in the first term of the president Clinton (Khan, 2016). The producer and director of the film has a unique capability to explain complex economic concepts in an easy language and his capabilities are also revealed in the documentary (Khan, 2016). The filmmakers were able to present a dramatic and extremely sensitive topic into an entertaining movie which can be grasped by its diverse audience. The current essay is written to review the documentary and its subject matter in the context of the modern American economy.
The topic of economic inequalities is not a new one for the global audience as it has been a topic of interest of several types of research and despite the global image of the United States as a country which provides equal economic opportunities for all; the problem of economic inequality still exists and during the recent years it has spiked beyond control. The rapid globalization and the role of the emerging markets in like China and India in the global economic sphere have expanded a gap between the economic classes in the American labor (Khan, 2016). The economic and social conditions for the labor class have gotten worse as the larger organizations tend to outsource their works to offshore companies which is viewed as a cost-effective methodology by their management (Khan, 2016). Moreover, the economic elite and its growing influence on the political infrastructure of the American administrations has also played their part. According to an estimated top 1% of the American economic elite hold crucial political and economic positions in the American administrations and influenced the decisions of the governments in their interests regardless of ordeal faced by common working-class Americans. The grip of the economic elites on the American administration is strengthening and such harsh realities were a subject of this documentary film.
The main gist of the economic inequality is the fact that the top economic elite which makes up only 1% of the American population has been able to gain from almost every economic performance or actions in the country or at the global level. From the documentary following aspects of the economic inequality in the United States can be summarized:
