Seth MacFarlane: The Best Animator of all time.
Seth MacFarlane is renowned independent animators, courtesy of his excellent work in film-making and animation. He is an American actor, filmmaker, animator and voice artist working primarily in animation and comedy. MacFarlane was born and raised in a little town of Kent in Litchfield County. At the age of two, he had started drawing the then popular cartoon characters Fred Flintstone and Woody Woodpecker. At nine, he had begun publishing a weekly comic strip tilled “Walter Crouton” for a Kent based local newspaper. After receiving his high school diploma from Kent School in 1991, McFarlane proceeded to study film, video and animation at the Rhodes Island School of Design (RISD) where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. It is at RISD that MacFarlane created his first animation work in his final year thesis titled the “Life of Larry.” He later created “Larry and Steve.” It is from these two animated short films that MacFarlane conceived “Family Guy” in 1995. He later created “American Dad,” an equally interesting animation. This research will provide a critical analysis of MacFarlane’s great animation works, Family Guy and American Dad, contextual information on the time periods of the films, and the visual samples.
Animation One
Family guy is one of the McFarlane’s great animation works. The show revolves around the adventures of family of the Griffins; a dysfunctional family consisting of parents Peter and Lois; their children Chris, Stewie and Meg and the anthropomorphic pet dog, Brian. The primary setting of the show is a fictional city of Quahog Rhode Island which exhibits much of its humor in the form of cutaway gags that ridicule American culture.
A number of themes are demonstrated in the show throughout all episodes of its 12 seasons some of which are very controversial. Of the numerous themes demonstrated in Family Guy, alcoholism, stereotyping and child neglect present themselves most frequently (Weebly, n.p). The theme of alcoholism is largely represented by Peter griffin, a notorious drunkard who spends most of his time with his friend in bar drinking alcohol. The theme fits Peter so well owing to cluelessness and thick-headedness. This is demonstrated in the show where Peter behaves badly under the influence of alcohol ridiculing anything and everything he feels is not correct.
The theme of alcoholism is also represented by some of the characters who are portrayed in the show to be under the influence of alcohol for the better part of their time. They often drink and drive and in many occasion this results to personal injury or injury to others including their own family (Weebly, n.p). This theme was made in this particular sitcom at a postcolonial time of America. The show focus on ridiculing contemporary events and humorous referencing of past events and the practices, beliefs and objects dominant in America.
