Second, do you think that these approaches are mutually exclusive of one another? Does America really have to pick one or the other? Or is there a place for both philosophies? Explain why or why not.

Governments ought to foster economic opportunities, and the proposals adopted by Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan can occur together, depending what economic measures are adopted, but administrations mostly favor one of the two philosophies rather than a mix of the two. Lyndon Johnson argued that blacks faced difficulties taking advantage of opportunities in an environment where there was suppression of their freedoms and rights (Foner, 2017). The call to action to support freedom than would be necessary, but so too was opening up opportunities. Reagan’s conservative perspective focused on reducing taxes and deregulation as a way to grow the economy, where there was limited government intervention. Johnson and Reagan had opposing views on the government’s role in fostering economic opportunity.
