The Heian period, between the 8th and 12th centuries, was characteristic of major transitions in Japan across the social, political, and cultural aspects of ancient society. Among the transitions witnessed during this period include the introduction of new Buddhist movements under the leadership of two revered monks, Saicho and Kukai. Saicho takes the credit for introducing the Tendai Buddhist movement, while Kukai introduced Esoteric Buddhism to the Japanese community. Both movements won a great success during the Heian period as they advocated for the universality of the teachings and doctrines of Buddhism based on a comprehensive understanding of diverse principles upheld by the different splinters or sects.
