The French discovered new places when they were attempting to find a new route to Cathay (China). The expedition explored much of North America and eventually established colonies there. These colonies led to establishment of cities and settlements in the region which includes the present-day Canada and parts of the United States. The French initially established bases in St. Lawrence river, Newfoundland, and Acadia (Nova Scotia) but gradually expanded to the Great Lakes region and parts of the trans-Appalachian west.
Challenges/opportunities
One of the primary reasons they settled in these lands is the presence of furry animals like the Beaver. Europe had hunted and greatly diminished the population of Beavers and the discovery of new areas with furry animals encouraged their settlement in the region.
