Chosŏn Confucian scholars condemned Buddhism because they felt it emphasized self-promotion. They scholars claimed that Buddhism stressed individual enlightenment, which encouraged separation from family or society (Chapter, n.d.). They argued such separation undermined Confucian ideals of filial piety that encouraged being good to one’s parents and ancestors. The Chosŏn Confucian scholars felt that Buddhism focused on understanding the sense that society is real as opposed to transitory. These scholars encouraged meditation as key to initiative unity and moral development (Chapter, n.d.).
