Please answer the following question in a written essay:
How and why did democratic structures develop in the 13 Colonies? Which groups were excluded? Cite specific examples.
Tips:
1. This question is meant to flex your analytical muscles. To receive an “A,” you need to do more than just leave an information dump. An “A” essay should grasp the major themes of the course and use strategic detail. Ideally, the essay should be 2-3 pages or so, but the ideal length depends on how concise the prose is.
2. Everything you need to answer this question is in the lecture notes. Take an extra close look at the “observations” that the instructor made at the end of each lecture. The most direct and easiest way to answer the question is to recall lecture notes, which you should be reading gradually according to the lecture schedule in the syllabus, and look for specific details or points that answer this question. Googling the question will lead you down various rabbit holes.
3. Look at the various assemblies (House of Burgesses), reasons why feudalism did not develop in the Americas, the role of land (the Headright System, for example), or colonial rage at the Stamp Act and other British policies in the 1760s. This essay can go in many different directions. My advice is to pick 2-3 topics and stick to that.
4. Stay calm! If you feel overwhelmed by this question, you are probably just overthinking it. Look through your notes and, if necessary, email the instructor for tips.
5. This paper will be submitted as an assignment in Blackboard and will go through plagiarism detection software.
6. Yes, this question is hard, but you will have your lecture notes to use. Do not list everything possible about the topic. It can go into various directions. Use your knowledge and understanding of the class to organize the paper into several themes related to the question and then fill in with details.

Democratic Structures in the Thirteen Colonies
Settlers in the American colonies moved there for various reasons. For some, it was to run away from religious persecution while for others it was to pursue economic interests. Regardless of the reasons, they all ended up in the thirteen colonies, far away from England. They had representative colonial governments but still submitted and maintained their loyalty to the King. However, slowly, the colonies started developing democratic structures, which can be termed as the cornerstone of American democracy. While the colonies were not totally independent from England, they had a form of self-government where they could make certain decisions on their own. Men who founded the colonies usually acted independently at first, and the government only interfered later. The development of democratic structures in the thirteen colonies was as a result of religious freedom, land ownership, and a representative assembly.
As posited earlier, some settlers moved from the Europeans to the Americas because they were fleeing religious persecution. After the religious reformation, Europe got engaged in religious wars and England was not an exception in the wars. Seeking settlement territories became an attractive option for England not only for the economic benefits but also for religious reasons. England sent away people who protested the Catholic beliefs to appease Ireland, which had strong catholic beliefs. Some of the settlers in the colonies, therefore, went to the Americas because they could not be oppressed in the Americas for their religious beliefs. For instance, Pennsylvania was home to people of different religions under the leadership of William Penn. When William Penn founded the colony, he advocated for religious freedom, and the English people who settled there enjoyed the freedom of religion. Also, in Massachusetts, the royal governor discouraged religious intolerance through a charter. Further, eligibility to vote in Massachusetts was no longer based on church membership. Thus, people of different religions could vote, as long as they met the other key requirements. Voting allowed the development of democratic structures and what is even more important is the fact that people of various religions could be represented. Even though most settlers in the colonies were anti-C...
