Decolonization after World War II
An Overview of Decolonization
Decolonization gained significance after the Second World War, as various European colonies in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and other world regions chose independence. A mixture of factors stimulated decolonization in the respective areas. These factors included the emergence of anti-colonial protests, the constantly evolving global power dynamics, and the urge for self-rule (Mohr, 2022). Another important decolonization trigger included the European colonial powers’ dissolution because of the war’s detrimental effects. The second war revealed colonialism’s characteristic inconsistencies since most European powers experienced a loss of moral authority, political uncertainty, and economic downturns. Moreover, World War II (WWII) encouraged equality, freedom, and self-rule – creating a demand for liberation from colonization among the colonized nations. Also, activists formed anti-colonial associations that supported economic, social, and political rights for citizens. These associations, mostly headed by supportive leaders, utilized different techniques, such as armed tools to non-violent methods. Mahatma Gandhi’s Indian Independence Movement is a famous example of these groups that led its people to impendence.
The geopolitical atmosphere also contributed to decolonization in the colonized territories. For instance, the United Nations (UN) created a conducive setting for colonized states to convey their independence needs and pressurize colonial powers to step down. Again, the rise of the United States (US) and the Soviet Union as power blocs obliged them to back up decolonization determinations to deal with the power competitors or influence the independent countries. Some colonial powers executed significant constitutional amendments and reforms to sustain control or power while encouraging nationalist needs. However, these struggles always became deficient of the colonized groups’ ambitions, resulting in rising resistance and independence demands. Decolonization or independence differed across distinct colonies and regions. While some changes were somewhat diplomatic and involved peaceful negotiations between national leaders and colonial authorities, others involved prolonged liberation efforts and violent conflicts (Zeleza, 2014). By the mid-20th century, most European colonies had achieved self-rule, restructuring the worldwide political scenery and forming a new dawn of independent states.
A Detailed Examination of the Decolonization Process in Africa
Escaping colonization in Africa was complicated and multidimensional as it stretched to many years within the twentieth century before ending in the late 1960s. Numerous countries, including Egypt, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, experienced post-colonialism (Lumen Learning, n.d.). Decolonization was transformative, guaranteed the culmination of the harsh European colonial control over the other less powerful world regions, and most importantly, the era of independent African countries. Different literature explores Africa's critical elements, efforts, and decolonization consequences...
