Culture in Latin America on Political Messaging

Essay Instructions:

For the final assignment, you will write a short paper (4-pages). As a Gordon Rule Course (Links to an external site.), the final paper for this class must be thesis-driven and demonstrate critical thinking. For this assignment, you must create a thesis statement (your answer to the question) and use evidence from our course materials to support it.
Why do you think culture has been such an important means of sharing political messages in Latin America?
To successfully write a paper addressing any of these three prompts, you will need to draw upon various course materials relevant to the question you select. You’ll need to consider my video lectures; the Skidmore, Smith, and Green readings; the Human Tradition readings (the biographies we’ve read weekly); the other assigned videos; and at least one primary source. For each of these questions, we have read and watched a number of relevant videos and texts. Use these to help you come up with your thesis and provide evidence to support it in the body of your essay. Obviously, not everything we’ve done will be relevant to the question you choose. If you’ve worked through all 7 modules during the term, you will know where to find material to help you answer the question you select. Again, you will want to use videos, readings, and at least one primary source.
This assignment does not require outside sources, and I strongly recommend that you stick to the sources within the course. I will be looking to see how you respond to the prompt and use evidence from our in-class materials. Outside materials are not likely to help and may distract from our shared readings, videos, and primary sources. Stick to our class materials.
GUIDELINES:
Papers should be 4 pages or approximately 1200 words long.
12 point, Times New Roman font.
1 inch margins at the top, bottom, and sides of the pages.
Include page numbers on all pages (it does not matter where).
Double space the text. Do not leave extra space between paragraphs (in Word, go to format and paragraph and set spacing after paragraph to zero)
Include your name, date, and class in the upper corner of the first page, single spaced.
Citations should be in Chicago style (Links to an external site.), using footnotes and a bibliography at the end.
ORGANIZATIONAL TIPS
Your paper should begin with an introductory paragraph. The thesis statement comes at the end of the introduction and clearly communicates your answer to the prompt. The introductory paragraph is followed by the body of the paper where you use evidence to convincingly argue for each aspect of your thesis. The final paragraph is a conclusion where you wrap up the elements of your argument. Remember clarity in writing helps communicate your ideas. Don’t use the authors’ voices (extensive quotes) where you can restate ideas in your own words.
CITATIONS: FOOTNOTES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY
Anytime you borrow ideas from a reading or video, you MUST footnote the material you are using—even if the idea is expressed in your own words. Anytime you directly quote from a reading, use quotation marks to indicate the borrowed language and include a footnote. All footnotes should be in Chicago-style (Links to an external site.).

Culture in Latin America Political Messaging
Introduction
One way of having the support of the people in any political setting is by resonating with their beliefs, culture, and identity. Therefore, for a government to ensure that its messages resonate with its citizens' needs, the statements must be coined according to the cultural beliefs of the citizens. In Latin America, for example, culture has been used as a critical element in shaping several things politically. The conflicts between Spain and France influenced Napoleon's rule in the 13 colonies in Latin America because the Latin culture appears to resonate more with the Hispanic culture. Citizens in several Latin American countries also turned to their cultural activities to communicate their grievances. Other cultures were also used to send messages of resistance and resilience by several Latin American nations, especially during the struggle for independence. This paper, therefore, highlights how culture provides a voice to the voiceless and oppressed communities of Latin America in airing their grievances and as a show of resilience, especially during the struggle for independence.
Importance of Culture in Latin America Political Message
One of the significances of cultural practices in Latin America on political messaging is its ability to provide voices for the oppressed and homeless individuals. In situations where authorities have appeared to be oppressing the less fortunate members of the society, culture is what they have always turned to air their grievances. A perfect example whereby culture was used to send a political message to the authorities was during the military reign in Chile, which led to the rise of Arpilleras women. After being denied the freedom to freely express themselves in public and denied the opportunity to learn about what was happening outside their parameters through the gagging of information, the voiceless mothers of Chile who lost loved ones in the hand of the military decided to find refuge through culture. The women made some form of clothing that was referred to as Arpirelleras. The Arpilleras were used to symbolize their unity and also reminded them of the hope of finding their loved ones. Eventually, when their hope of reuniting with their loved ones faded off, the women got the strength to come together firmly to hold demonstrations..[Facing History and Ourselves. “The Arpilleras of Chile (Majorie Agosin)]
On the other hand, the Jews who escaped persecution in Russia to seek refuge in Argentina also embraced the agricultural culture during the colonial days. The culture helped the Jews convince argentine authority that they were not useless as the Russian administration had claimed and that they were important in agricultural production.. This example shows how culture can be used in Latin America to send political messages, especially from the less fortunate to the authority. Without a substantial value of culture, the Argentine administration would most likely fail to be convinced by the agricultural practice that the Jews were engaging in during the time. As vague as it might be, the masquerading culture of the Jews as agriculturalists played...
