Understanding the importance of philosophy in society is important for anyone. It allows him to have a better appreciation of the ‘whys’ of things and not only the ‘hows’ and the ‘whats’ that surround it. Accordingly, this kind of appreciation could be easily reached through the help of concepts that would provide the foundation of analyzing reality. Thus, in this article, the author would like to utilize Rossiter’s ‘apparent paradox’ to understand the development of both human beings and civilizations through time. All in all, the author believes that similar to human beings, civilizations develop an ‘incomplete wisdom’ that makes it difficult for it to realize what it is meant to be CITATION Lip82 \l 1033 (Lippmann & Rossiter, 1982).
Rossiter’s Incomplete Paradox
In his book, Rossiter describes the ‘apparent paradox’ as the phenomenon wherein “men grow older they grow wiser but sadder” CITATION Lip82 \l 1033 (Lippmann & Rossiter, 1982). Particularly, he noted that this phenomenon is brought upon by the reason that as men acquire more knowledge about the character of the world and their powers, “they [still] remain naïve as to what they should expect of the world and themselves”.
In reality, this phenomenon could be easily observed (hence ‘apparent’) as men tend to focus on learning the whats and the hows of this world, without actually knowing the why. People build their careers based on their ambitions such as money, power, or knowledge, without actually deeply reflecting on what Rossiter described as an individual’s “deep and powerful cr...
