There is a transparent image of young children walking the streets, trying to survive in harsh circumstances as can be. They were all brought together by their difficulties regardless of race, ethnic groups, or even their religion. There were immigrant and native-born, of Jewish, Italian, Polish, German, Irish, or native-born American parents. Young boys of eleven to fourteen years of age were not cut out. They had to move on from their "childish games" and get their hands dirty in order to survive. They sold newspapers, and the newspaper companies took advantage of them. The children, however, finely tuned it to be their source of work and play. They used the free spaces and created recreation in their work. At first, they spent their incomes on the abundances of the city, buying dime novels, candy, and sometimes cigarettes. However, in just a little while, they learned to manage their income to ensure they made profits by the end of the day.
Older boys above between fourteen and twelve years also had a role to play in the provision of family income. Some helped shopkeepers in order to generate income, but most of them had to be "hustlers" in order to get through. After school, they made direct sales. They had to sell gum, chocolates on roads to the "white-collars" on their way to and from work.
