CANADA 1F91 – Written Assignment #1 History Essay Paper

Essay Instructions:

Need to understand Canadian history!

CANA 1F91 – Written Assignment #1 (THE BACKGROUND FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT) Pick a coin or a stamp that represents or symbolizes Canada and Canadian identity. Your job is to critically analyze what aspect of Canadian identity is highlighted by your object of choice. Explain how it resonates with Canadian identity and how it cultivates desire for Canada and reinforces certain Canadian ideals/values. As Cormack and Cosgrave suggest in the introduction of Desiring Canada, coins and stamps are objects “that circulate through daily life to signify and reproduce the notion of a nation-state.” They argue that “Canadianness is more than the various cultural, ethnic, and regional differences to be found within the country; it also involves a mediation of those differences.” In other words, Canadian identity comes from how we collectively imagine ourselves as Canadian, mediated through objects, symbols, and everyday practices. Consider coins or stamps as communication media, helping cultivate this identity. But coins and stamps do more than simply represent things that represent Canada. In the conclusion of Desiring Canada, Cormack and Cosgrave suggest that CBC contests were about far more than the recirculation of Canadian signifiers. They were also about the reassertion of a set of Canadian values. What values are reinforced via your coin/stamp of choice? Thus, a very poor analysis would simply identify a Canadian coin or stamp that features a Canadian flag, or a maple leaf (or a beaver…) and talk about the centrality of those things, the signs and symbols that have become stereotypically associated with Canada. Don’t do this! Go beyond the simple and the obvious. Don’t just say why the loon or the polar bear was chosen for the coin. Don’t just reiterate why the railroad is historically significant. Rather, emphasize how these things connect to the way in which the Canadian nation collectively imagines itself. Connect and elaborate upon key themes about Canadian identity (as highlighted in the course and the text, Desiring Canada). The worst analyses will describe the coin/stamp without engaging in a critical analysis of how it articulates feelings of pleasure, connection, and community within Canadians. Very poor analyses will repeat well-worn historical facts about the thing represented on the coin/stamp (and suggest that’s all there is to it). Don’t merely do this. If you’ve chosen a coin that highlights an important historical event/person, go beyond saying why it was chosen and emphasize how a feeling of organic community (nationhood) is bolstered by its signification. How does it signify Canadianness? To put it in Desiring Canada terms, how does the coin/stamp (more importantly, the symbol chosen to represent Canada, Canadians, Canadian values on it) make Canada recognizable to others – filling in “the gap” of our collective identity, so to speak, so that the country appears as something other than an ahistorical and empty space?

Canada has many aspects symbolizing the Canadian identity towards preserving the cultural, religious, and historical values of the nation. A coin is one of the factors uniting people towards having a common purpose in the nation. A two-dollar coin consists of the polar bear serving as a national symbol bounding all people towards the national heritage. Polar bear forms my object of interest due to people’s interest to preserve the wildlife species in the country. The two-dollar coin shows people's urge to preserve wildlife to preserve the ancestral value of the country. Peoples treasures wild animals on daily life than the other artificial resources made in the industries such as vehicles and garment tools. It reflects the people’s effort to eliminate poaching behavior in the immigrants’ people.
Furthermore, the Polar Bear symbol present on the coin teaches the growing on the need to preserve the national heritage of the nation. The central bank of Canada makes the two-dollar coins from the gold, which shows that they attach the values of gold to that of the Polar Bear. The polar bear represents the effort of people in the struggle to earn a living for a better life (Becker et al., 2017). It demonstrates the fruitless effort towards attaining what intended despite the difficulty encountered. Besides, it unites all individuals of the nation to preserve peace in the country. For instance, the polar symbol on the two-dollar coin serves the same as the other symbols such as the national flag, the national anthem, Maple Leaf, the Great Seal, and Beaver. They promote peaceful coexistence among people to act as brother’s keeper in hard times. The symbol offers appropriate knowledge to even illiterate people to preserve that country’s wild animals. Institutions act as facilitators that help the young children to understand the need to adhere to the symbol of Polar Bear.
Cormack and Cosgrave show that the symbol of the coin form the cultural, ethnic, and regional of the country, which guides people daily. The symbol constituted the practices of people towards embracing the natural resources in the nation as well as other wild animals around the world. People had the urge to support wild animals as well as natural forests to preserve these creatures for a balanced existence in the ecosystem. For instance, each country has a way of honoring symbols through daily hard work duties to enable a successful nation. The polar bear symbol on the two-dollar coin aggravates people to protect and engage in preservative activities of wildlife. Besides, the government could set aside a national day that allows people to visit the park free to understand the need to preserve the endangered wildlife species. The event will create awareness on the significance of the wild animals to society.
Furthermore, a free visit of the part promotes unity and improved efforts to manage wild animals as well as plant in the country.
