The first inaugural address was in 1801 by Thomas Jefferson. He had succeeded John Adams. In America, inaugural address signifies the American democracy. It represents a peaceful transfer of power from one government to another. Despite times being divided in 1801, the power was peacefully transferred from Adams to Jefferson. In his inaugural address, Jefferson pointed out his visions for America.
This was the first time when a true election had been held in America. The outgoing president John Adams, despite Jefferson striking a note of reconciliation in his speech, entirely skipped the ceremony. In quoted form, the president said, “We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists. If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.”
