Lateral violence occurs between colleagues in healthcare. It comprises of withholding information, incriminating, and gossiping. Despite attempts from state nursing organizations to address this issue and inspire workplaces to adopt a nil tolerance strategy, lateral violence continues. One cause mentioned in the literature for the endurance of lateral violence between staff members is the middle administration’s lack of awareness of its prevalence.
For example, in the emergency department of a public hospital, nurses with two years of experience worked side by side with nurses with one year of experience. The nurses with less experience created a clique and started ganging up on the experienced nurses, complaining to the administration that the experienced nurses were slow and their practice invalid.
