Post-traumatic stress disorder can occur after natural disasters, military combat, personal tragedy, and trauma. When symptoms occur, the individual becomes incapable of functioning due to flashbacks to the original event or events.
After reading the above information, discuss the following points (minimum of 250 words):
• What are the most important factors for the registered nurse to assess when dealing with a female refuge who is exhibiting flashbacks from trauma, especially sexual trauma or physical abuse?
• Describe the cultural considerations and language barriers the RN will need to address to foster therapeutic communication for the female refugee.
• List common triggers for this population and describe how the RN can assist to decrease the effects.
• Provide two nursing diagnosis statements (each statement must include an actual nursing diagnosis, related factor and as evidenced by) that might apply to a refugee patient experiencing trauma flashbacks.

Nurses need to identify the trigger factors that affect the female refugees as they may exhibit hyperarousal behavior when distressed (Heavey, 2014). At other times, the refugee rape victims may exhibit avoidance symptoms to cope with their traumatic events including detachment and inability to remember some aspects associated with the trauma. Additionally, the level of social support affects the ability of the rape refugee victims to cope with PTSD. The rape victim is also likely to feel ostracized by the community and fear interventions.
The RN should consider language barriers when intervening, while relying on interpreters since understanding the refugees’ language avoids misunderstandings. The cultural considerations include the beliefs and values that affect how they choose medical interventions. Both the language and culture of the patients are related to health literacy. Nurses should practice self-awareness to avoid biases and assumptions that affect intervention, as cultural competence makes it easier to explain the rationale of the nursing interventions (Singleton & Krause, 2009).
