1 Reflect on opportunities for client advocacy. Identify one way in which you can advocate for a deficit issue affecting client communication.
Nurses are essential in helping the patients make informed choices concerning their health. The advocacy process involves assisting clients to navigate complex clinical systems, interpreting complicated clinical terminologies, and explaining various medical ethical practices before deciding (Pollens, 2020). Nurses can make the best advocates as they directly contact the patients and their advocacy skills promote healing. One way I advocate for patients is by helping them navigate through periods of anxiety and confusion by communicating with their physicians. I will educate the patient on the tests and procedures while adhering to privacy rules and regulations. As an experienced nurse, I will integrate all client care facets, ensure their concerns are addressed, and standard upheld to achieve the treatment’s desired goal.
2 Describe what you might say at your first meeting with a confused client as you begin your shift.
Working with cognitively impaired patients can be a challenge, especially at the beginning of a shift. Confused patients may encounter trouble when following their medical instructions and prescriptions and need to be closely monitored whenever possible (McCorry & Mason, 2020). The first strategy is to address the cognitively impaired patient directly and distinctly at a natural speed without shouting at them. Additionally, I will use simple direct language while presenting questions and statements at a time. When the patients depict non-verbal cues suggesting they never understood me, I will rephrase the statement.
3 What are some examples of ageism affecting older adults?
Ageism is a form of discrimination against people. According to social scientists, the first thing people recognize when they meet new people is age, race, and gender. Ageism can be a risk factor, especially if older individuals have a history of chronic diseases (Lyons et al., 2018). Older people are attributed to being forgetful, but the concept has been overblown.
