Week 5 Journal
By week 5, I should have established professional relations with my clients and their families. My working environment will be focused on elderly patients, hence the need to create good relationships with their care providers.
My objective for the week will be to develop effective professional relationships with both the patients and their caregivers, considering that professional relationships play significant roles in promoting the achievement of proper health care as always emphasized by my preceptor. It is important that the patients have confidence in my competence, hence the need for the development of a good rapport. The relationship to be created should be based on mutual respect, trust, and knowledge (Mitnick, Leffler, & Hood, 2010). Strong relationships with the patient will result in the obtainment of quality information about the disease, thus easing the treatment process. On the other hand, the relationship between the patient and the caregiver should be built on trust and confidence so as to create a conducive environment for the healing process.
My preceptor always reminds me of the role played by caregivers in maximizing the quality of health and life, especially with the elderly, and the need to work hand in hand with them. Family members assist the patients in managing and coping with their illness and ensures that the management plans are adhered to accordingly as prescribed by the physicians. A good relationship with the caregiver will promote their trust my services, and build confidence to leave the patient alone with me during an examination (Mitnick, Leffler, & Hood, 2010). It has been noted that some patients have confidential information, which they cannot easily share in the presence of their family members. Effective relationships with both the patient and their caregivers will help promote my confidence and effectiveness in providing treatment.
Week 6 Journal
My plan for week six is to focus on health promotion and preventative practices towards making independent decisions concerning the management and treatment of noted medical issues.
Although I may currently be working under my preceptor towards perfecting my skills, it is necessary that I learn to be independent in making decisions as far as disease management and treatment is concerned. My instructor reminds me that I will always be working alone with no one to consult frequently, hence the need to learn to be independent. Despite working towards achieving independence in decision-making, I will also be working on perfecting my health promotion and disease prevention skills, as I understand that knowledge is a key contributor towards attaining quality health care. Health promotions empower individuals and the society towards engaging in healthy practices and behaviors that reduce the vulnerability to developing chronic diseases (American Psychology Association, 2017). When people are informed, they adopt preventive strategies that reduce illness and infection risks.
