Problem statement
A significant number of Swiss people living in nursing homes have been diagnosed with dementia. The prevalence of dementia globally has soared to greater heights with 83% (Koppitz et al., 2017) of the patients experiencing pain which has not been adequately addressed. Also, majority of healthcare workers in nursing homes have inadequate experience and in that case will not recognize, assess or treat pain among the patients who have manifest serious problem on time, and professionally. The pain and behavioral problems has been reported to cause greatest difficulties in managing or controlling the symptoms of dementia cross the nursing homes. A proportion of 52% (Koppitz et al., 2017) of Swiss healthcare workers in eliciting services nursing homes have inadequate knowledge or work as assistants. Pain assessment and management in daily clinical situations across nursing homes seems inadequate. As a result, older people with highly complex health problems are under the care of inexperienced staff. Inadequate knowledge is associated with delayed treatments, inappropriateness and incompetent treatment of people with complex issues such as those experiencing pain with dementia. There is therefore the need to have effective channel of laying communication and information setting which allow healthcare assistants to efficiently share observations with healthcare physicians to launch decision making processes concerning persons experiencing dementia with pain.
Review of the Literature
The researcher collects data from myriad sources which are peer reviewed including first-hand information across Swiss nursing homes. To manage the pain, a dairy for the pain detection and check of diseases progress has been considered as an appropriate non-pharmacological intervention for pain (Koppitz et al., 2017). This concept has been preferred following the fact that nurses are available across nursing homes 24 hours 7 days of a week (24/7). In that case, the nurses have deep knowledge on the patient, needs and responses. These nurses are therefore perfectly suitable to handle older people at the nursing homes.
Daily personal activities involving face to face with patient care are also identified as a concept of managing the pain among dementia patients. Such activities include breathing exercises, among other daily activities, sufficient food and drinks (Scales, Zimmerman and Miller, 2018). Another concept identified by the research is the trial and error method which is very helpful in analgesic during unclear presence of pain. Case discussions are also encouraged as they are used in daily clinical activities due to their effectiveness. Case discussions have over the last several decades been employed in the long-term care for dementia patients (Scales et al., 2018).
