Wrong Operation Doctor (ethics and integrity)
Hospitals find it hard to protect patients from wrong-site surgery.
Last year a jury returned a $20 million negligence verdict against
Arkansas Children’s Hospital for surgery performed on the wrong side
of the brain of a 15-year-old boy who was left psychotic and severely
brain damaged. Testimony showed that the error was not disclosed to
his parents for more than a year. The hospital issued a statement
saying it deeply regretted the error and had “redoubled our efforts to
prevent” a recurrence.
So, what happened? “Health care has far too little accountability for
results … . All the pressures are on the side of production; that’s how
you get paid,” said Peter Pronovost, a prominent safety expert and
medical director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Innovation in Quality
Patient Care. He added that increased pressure to quickly turn over
operating rooms has trumped patient safety, increasing the chance of
error.
Kenneth W. Kizer, who coined the term “never event” nearly a
decade ago when he headed the National Quality Forum, a leading
patient safety organization, said he believes reducing the number of
errors will require tougher reporting rules and increased
transparency.

The case of a 15-year-old boy who was left psychotic and severely brain-damaged after a surgery performed on the wrong side of his brain depicts the integrity issue of professional negligence. The boy was scheduled for a brain operation to conduct a medical examination before necessitating the surgery. As a result, the surgeons were mandated to determine the right part of the brain to perform the surgery. Surprisingly, the unfolding outcome that the doctors ended up operating on the boy's wrong side of the brain is pure evidence of negligence. As Boodman (2011) posited, unethical failure on doctors' side cannot be used as a defense for their wrongful and immoral actions. The surgeons who were conducting the brain surgery to ensure the operation performed with utmost precision were the ultimate responsibility. Therefore, the negligence of the surgeons irrefutably justifies the blame being put on the shoulders.
Criminal Charges
It is indisputable that the boy's suffering is utterly a pain that has been inflicted by the negligence of the doctors. The doctors blatantly failed in their duty, and no defense extent can excuse their action because the damage inflicted is of permanent severe consequence. Considering the cost of brain surgeries, the physicians were obligated to operate the boy on his brain's right side after his parents had executed their required responsibility of paying for the necessary expenses. In the interest of the necessity to comply with the demands of their professional obligation, the doctors were compelled to ensure that they operate the right side of the brain following the prior examination guidelines.
