Word cloud generators have become popular tools for meetings and team-building events. Groups or teams are asked to use these applications to input words they feel best describe their team or their role. A “word cloud” is generated by the application that makes prominent the most-used terms, offering an image of the common thinking among participants of that role.
What types of words would you use to build a nursing word cloud? Empathetic, organized, hard-working, or advocate would all certainly apply. Would you add policy-maker to your list? Do you think it would be a very prominent component of the word cloud?
Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale. When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation.

There are a few undeniable facts about nursing. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2019), nursing is the largest healthcare profession in the U.S., with a population of more than 3.8 million RNs. It is projected that the field of nursing will continue to grow, and every year more than 200,000 RNs will be added to the current number. However, despite such numbers, fewer RNs and APRNs are involved in policy-making. Different reasons necessitate the above, including inadequate skills, limited policy education among the nurses, and a lack of awareness. Despite these barriers or challenges, nurses still have a role to play in influencing healthcare policies. It is unfair to the public and nurses when people with little knowledge about healthcare make key decisions that impact nurses. So, a case for nurses' participation in policy-making is presented in this paper by analyzing their policy-making roles and opportunities for policy-making participation.
Role of RNs and APRNs in Policy-Making
It is the nurses' role to join professional nursing organizations and use these groups' lobby powers to influence or champion policies that enhance the healthcare system. Examples of these professional organizations include the American Nurses Association, Emergency Nurses Association, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, National League of Nursing, American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, etc. According to Matthews (2012), these organizations "speak to the needs of, and advocate for all nurses and the nursing profession independent of specialty areas." This means that these organizations can spearhead or forward nursing concerns that seek to enhance the healthcare system. For example, they can be used to champion for better working conditions or more shifts to reduce fatigue and medical errors.
