The four foundational ethical principles should be considered universal. There are several reasons for holding this position. First, the principles are developed with the wellbeing of the patient in mind (Dean, 2021). For instance, these ethical principles aim to ensure maximum benefit for the patient, protect the patient from any harm, and allow the patient an opportunity for informed consent and the power to make self-determination. Secondly, while there are different cultures around the world, most of these cultures would advocate for principles that aim to achieve the wellbeing of a patient. Since the four foundational ethical principles aim to attain such wellbeing, they should be considered universal. Thirdly, most countries and cultures around the world have significantly adopted the western lifestyle and ideals. Consequently, the foundational ethical principles can be regarded as universal by virtue of this phenomenon.
