Telemedicine refers to the use of technology to advance the delivery of medical services. It mainly involves the flow of information and hence relies on the internet. Consequently, its success is attributed to the spread of the internet. Telemedicine has several classes based on the branch of medicine, where the internet is used to transfer information. Two of these areas include teleradiology and telecardiology.
Teleradiology
Teleradiology refers to the use of the internet to deliver radiological information. Radiology is a medical process that involves capturing images of the internal body parts using x-rays, MRIs, and ultrasounds to help in diagnosis or treatment. Afsaneh Khetrapal discusses the teleradiology practice in her article published in the News Medical. She explains the term as the ability to transfer medical images from one location to another to allow their viewing and interpretation for diagnostic or consultative purposes. 
Teleradiology was invented to cover up for the shortage of radiologists, especially in remote areas. The technology allows radiologists to offer their services without being physically present to the patient. Rural hospitals are the most affected by the shortage of radiologists. Besides, the few radiologists that are there may not have sufficient training to interpret some of the radiological images. Such images may require input from a specialist radiologist. 
Besides, the technology also helps small hospitals to reduce their operation costs by outsourcing radiology services and also freeing up their health service providers to care for other patients. Since teleradiology depends on technology, it is not applicable in areas with poor internet. Therefore, for the process to be successful, the area should have access to stable internet.
