The evolution of technological advancement has impacted systematic changes in the delivery of health care services. Telemedicine has emerged in health care since most doctors do not have adequate time to attend to the large populations of patients. Telehealth should not replace but supplement the personal encounter between patients and doctors. However, this innovation has faced various issues of concern, such as the threat to patients’ privacy and the patient-physician relationship.
The introduction and use of telehealth delivered care raise an issue of concern on the patient-physician relationship. One of the essential aspects of the engagement is the value of face-face encounter between nurses and patients (Mehta, 2014). Although advanced technology has made it easy for nurses to deliver care to patients remotely, it has affected the personal encounter between the clients and the clinicians. The initial face-to-face meeting between physicians and patients fostered value in the development of mutual trust and empathy. Some patients, especially the older population, might not believe in telehealthcare delivery (Chung, Demiris, & Thompson, 2016). Consequently, although they may receive the required level of care and medication, their mindset may hinder recovery since they only trust in personal encounters with physicians for appropriate treatment procedures (Chung, Demiris, & Thompson, 2016). Hence, telehealth is guided by various guidelines to ensure the creation, if not maintenance of personal relationships between physicians and patients.
