Title of Quantitative Article
The article by Pace, Macaulay, Salsberg, Jagosh, and Seller (2012) examined the efficiency and reliability of Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) in appraising the quality of systematic mixed studies. The article, which is an example of a quantitative research since data was presented in numerical form (Hartas, 2010), was published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies.
Problem Statement
It can be challenging to appraise studies that have adopted mixed methods, which prompted the need to develop an appraisal tool that can mitigate this challenge.
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the study was to test the efficiency and reliability of the appraisal tool, by conducting a pilot study where four reviewers examined the reliability prior and post discussions to create an improved test criterion.
Research Question (s)/ Hypothesis
Although not explicitly stated, the study sought to answer the question: Is the MMAT efficient and reliable in appraising mixed studies?
Study Methods
The study adopted a participatory research (PR) approach, which basically involves both the researcher and all those affected by the research process collaborating. A pilot tool was developed by 4 reviewers, who discussed the initial criteria and came up with improved criteria which also considered non-randomized control. To test the efficiency and reliability of the appraisal tool, a tutorial and an appraisal form were provided to guide reviewers.
Key Findings
The study revealed that the average time required to appraise a study was 14 minutes. Prior to the discussion among the reviewers, there was a 0.72 consistency level based on the global quality score, which increased to 0.94 after the discussions.
Further, according to the study, there was moderate to perfect agreement among the reviewers concerning the inter-rater reliability, especially after the discussions to improve the criteria.
