Childhood obesity in most cases has its roots to the weight gain by the mother during pregnancy. The first recommendation towards reducing childhood obesity, thereby is enhancing prenatal care. Women planning for pregnancy or those already pregnant need to be informed on the importance of conceiving at a healthy weight and maintaining a healthy weight gain during pregnancy. Proper pregnancy care enhances the birth of average weight children, hence reduced the risk of obesity (White House Task Force, 2010).
The steps towards better prenatal care include visiting a specialist for guidance as soon as possible, eating healthy, taking vitamin supplements, maintaining good hygiene and exercising regularly.
The recommendation is drawn from the adolescent’s perspective whereby first-time mothers lack the know-how on prenatal care. The group is more vulnerable and thereby require special attention. (Naan, 2004).
The theory of human attachment is the most widely applied theory of human development stages. The method associates prenatal care with marital relationships, depressive symptoms, health behaviours and postpartum mother to child relationship. Also, the psychological theories of alcoholism and drinking, indicate that maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of child development impairment, obesity being the most probable effect (White House Task Force, 2010).
To ensure that prenatal care follows ethical guidelines of psychology, it is important that concerned medical practitioners understand the constituents of multiple relationships, protect the client's confidentiality, respect the autonomy of the people and understand their roles and those of the customer. When a conflict of interest is avoided, the process achieves its objectives quickly.
