Background and Significance
Poverty impacts the lives of people all over the world. Women and children are characteristically the chief victims, especially in the low-income economies. However, even the rich countries are fighting to alleviate poverty issues. Every country has a significant percentage of its population living below the poverty line, and the ripple effects trickle down to later generations. Canada is considered and truly is one of the richest countries in the world. Its economy is appropriately ranked among the best. However, reports indicate that it is still plagued with poverty problems. According to Young (2017), “more than a million Canadian children are living in low-income households, according to census data.” She continues to state that “census information released by Statistics Canada shows that in 2015, nearly 1.2 million children across Canada were living in low-income households, representing about 17 percent of all Canadian children.” For a country like Canada, this is unacceptable. Canada is considered a leader in many aspects, and therefore, it should not be lagging behind in the fight against poverty.
Bains (2017) reported that “Canada ranks 37th on a list of 41 rich countries for children having access to enough nutritious food, and higher-than-average rates of child homicide and teen suicide also point to a need for action.” Children are delicate and fragile beings, and if they are not taken care of, they might end up in the wrong places or grow with poor mentalities.
