Monitoring narcotic prescriptions by designated authorities are important for the prevention of its abuse. It allows a more proactive approach towards curbing drug abuse through the cooperation of both the State and the healthcare provider. One example of a State registry policy regarding narcotic prescription and use is the Georgia Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (GAPDMP). In this program, the State mandates both prescribers and dispensers a set of rules and protocols that they must follow to comply with the program. On the one hand, this includes the necessity for compliance with the requirements to become a valid prescriber and dispenser. On the other hand, this includes the protocols in operating and manning both agencies.
