Solving a Communication Problem Using Hardware Solution (Essay Sample)
Health Level Seven International (HL7) is a not-for-profit, standards-developing organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive framework and related standards for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information that supports clinical practice and the management, delivery, and evaluation of health services.
After reading "Strategic Initiatives" (see Module 4 assigned readings), refer to the journals listed:
Search the GCU Library and the websites of professional health care informatics organizations, such as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Useful periodicals include:

Healthcare IT News
Locate a case study that discusses how a health care organization solved a communication problem with a hardware solution while maintaining existing software.
Prepare a professional report (1,250-1,500 words) as if you are the informatics director of a 300-bed facility and the chief operating officer (COO) has given you the following directives:
Improve communication and coordination between admitting, laboratory, pharmacy, and clinicians to increase throughput; assume that each department has its own system currently in place.
Propose a solution that maintains existing software in each department and is supported by the HL7 initiatives.
In addition, define your focus and select a hardware solution; it may consist of a phased approach or an approach that directs attention only to one of the groups, or it may involve all of the aforementioned departments.
Provide a solution; emphasize interoperability.
Discuss how HL7 will improve communication and coordination between the departments.
Address the challenges of incorporating interoperability mandates from the Office of the National Coordinator.
Consider the challenges of an environment that is best of breed and the desire to move to a standard EHR across a health care enterprise.
Your solution may not implement new EHR software, but must provide a hardware solution to increase throughput.
Be creative with the context and formatting.
Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Solving a Communication Problem Using Hardware Solution
Health Level Seven International (HL7) is a private organization established in 1987. The organization has over the years offered guidelines to equipment manufacturers and software developers on health information technology standards and interoperability. Their guidelines are intended to assist medical institutions to improve service delivery and ease of interoperability challenges (Wood, 2012). The current HL7 guidelines (HL7 v2) specify the manner in which data production and operation of all healthcare systems and equipment should be handled in a modern healthcare institution. Postmodern healthcare systems and equipment are expected to make use of the consolidated CDA information, whose templates are derived from the HL7 v 3. The second revision (HL7 v2) is said to possess a greater degree of interoperability when compared to the new HL7 v 3. In addition, HL7 is said to have systems that are able to integrate new and future systems easily, and as such, need not be phased out. The numerous healthcare systems are said to have been developed independently. Thus integration results in delays, which not only add cost but also erode the timeless and quality of interventions.
Challenges with the Current System
Currently, there are many IT challenges to the advancement of the nation’s health care system. The most critical among these IT issues include “large-scale management of healthcare data” and “data sharing and collaboration”. It is noted that vast amounts of healthcare data remain untapped, especially because there are no proper IT solutions. Specifically, patient details are said to reside in healthcare systems and digital silos that do not share information with each other. If these silos are torn, medical practitioners can be able to effectively use the health-related information to provide cost-effective, timely, quality and efficient healthcare to patients.
At present, most 300-bed facilities have challenges with respect to coordination and information sharing among departments. If I were the informatics director, I would recommend some steps to be taken in order to ensure that we achieve throughput. I would advise that the collective Data Entry (CDN) be used to allow for the sharing and querying of HL7 v 3 clinical documents in the distributed healthcare atmosphere. I also recommend for the use of a querying technique referred to as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). If used correctly, the AES technique would help ensure that there is better communication between departments and that information is exchanged in a secure way between the senders and receivers.
Slavov et al. (2013) state that a public key cryptographic technique is the solution to sharing a common key between senders and receivers. This implies that a sender should have a private key that is utilized in encrypting a message before being sent. A receiver, on the other hand, has to have a private key to use in decrypting the received message. This ensures that messages are sent and exchanged electronically in a secure manner, with no interference from a third party. CDN would assist in sustaining the cryptographic technique in our medical facility, which helps to protect the privacy of our patients’ documents. The technique has been successful, and this has been confirmed by a study carried out within our facility using Amazon EC2 as a test bed. The study established that CDN shows good performance in a situation where there is a large amount of data.
