Managing the Side Effects of Corticosteroid
Addison’s disease is a rare chronic disorder brought about by the failure of the adrenal glands in the human body. The adrenal gland produces Cortisol, an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant hormone, which helps to minimize reactions like, inflammation, and swelling from allergies to other autoimmune disorders. However, failure of the adrenal gland to produce cortisol will result to a rare condition of Addison’s disorder (Agrawal et al., 2015). A person with this type of condition is treated with corticosteroids drugs to replace insufficient amounts of cortisols made by adrenal glands.
Like any other treatment, corticosteroid treatment for Addison’s disorder causes side effects. Common side effects of corticosteroid treatment include fluid retention, weight gain, and depression. Fluid retention is a common side effect when treating this condition with corticosteroid treatment by causing swelling in one’s lower legs. Weight gain is another side effect where there are deposits of fats in one’s abdomen, face, and back of the neck. Depression is another common side effect resulting to problems with behavior, mood, memory, and other psychological effects (Mayo Clinic, 2016).
In the adolescent, there are factors, which make a diagnosis of Addison’s disease problematic. Such factors include symptoms, long-term outlook, and risk factors. The symptoms occur as a result of the side effects due to medication of Addison’s disease. In the adolescent, symptoms such as irritability, depression, and darkening in skin color may be a problem. The long-term outlook is another factor, which makes diagnosis of the disease a problem to adolescent. People with the disease will have to get treatment for the rest of their lives. This will cause a slower growth of the bones, and weight loss. Risk factors such as autoimmune diseases make a diagnosis for the disease a problem to adolescent (Brindles & Yu, 2016).
