Chlamydia symptoms appear within one to three weeks after infection in most cases. The disease is however considered a silent disease because most patients do not always exhibit the symptoms. The common signs and symptoms of this disease may include some discharge from the vagina or penis, and pain while urinating. If the disease is left to advance without treatment it may pose serious complications such as infertility can occur.
Signs and Symptoms
In women, Chlamydia symptoms may include an abnormal vaginal discharge that may also come with a burning sensation when urinating. The disease is no often diagnosed or treated until complications have arisen. If you partners suspect that they have the infection then they can see a doctor immediately (Gantz, 2006). The infection attacks the cervix and the urethra first, and then spreads from the urethra and the cervix to the fallopian tubes. To those that exhibit the signs of Chlamydia, they may experience: low back pain, nausea, pain during sex, bleeding between menses and low back pain.
In men, they may also experience a burning sensation in urination and may have a discharge from the penis. They may also experience burning and itching around the penis opening and the testicles may swell and become painful. The throat can be infected if an individual performs oral sex on an infected partner.
Testing and Diagnosis
To test and diagnose Chlamydia is relatively simple and easy. A swab can be used to take a sample of the discharge from the cervix for antigen testing or Chlamydia culture.
