Introduction
Sex addiction is a habit that has been a byte for television jokes and even within the social circles among most peers. This is relative to the fact that, it has been largely presented as a different habit that can be socially acceptable among most peers. However, it is no longer a laughing matter as of recently; it was classified as mental health disorders (Hope, 2018). Sex addiction in this context mainly refers to compulsive sexual behavior or sexual impulsivity. It is associated with an out control behavior which induces distress and impairment and ability to function properly socially and the inability to control one’s choices of sexual behaviors. To put this into perspective, any habits are associated with, prostitution, extramarital affairs, exhibitionism, compulsive masturbation, compulsively using pornography, voyeurism, cybersex, incest, child molestation as well as rape (Roller, 2004). These are several habits that all are associated with the patients lacking the element of control in the case or the other in a manner that depicts addiction.
What is more is that there is a strong connection between neurochemistry and the process of addiction which further ties to substance abuse. In the nursing field this a severe condition requiring intervention and one that has only been considered of late as a case of mental health, making it quite intriguing as a challenge. What is more that there trends showing that women are most affected by this mental health problem.
Statistics
The mental health problem has been escalating over the years. Originally, the problem was approximated to affect between 6 and 10% of the American population (Roller, 2004). However, the more recent indication of the static point to the fact that, this has since changed to affect an estimated 45% (Roller, 2004). What is even more astonishing is the fact that, half of these are women. This goes to show the extent to which the condition is rampant in the population. This is statistics that indicate that close to half the entire population of the United States is associated with sexually deviant behavior in one way or the other. This is a worrying trend, and one that means that there is a serious need to address the situation before it gets out of hand and such practices are not just socially accepted but end causing health, social and financial costs. Habits such as extramarital activities, prostitution, child molestation, incest, and rape have already been established beyond reasonable doubt that they have health, social and financial implications (Roller, 2004). In some of the cases, they increase the causes of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, and death. This is before all the social costs are linked together to get the actual picture of the impact of saying sexually transmitted diseases have on the community after their loved ones die. When the accumulated impacts of the impulsive sexually deviant behaviors are added up and linked to their impacts on the society, it prompts that the healthcare sector such as nursing to establish sustainable interventions.
