INTRODUCTION
As changes are occurring in the fields of healthcare financing, policy, and focus, more emphasis is being placed on healthier communities. One of the primary roles of a community health nurse is to assess the community or population in order to determine its health status in relation to its assets and needs.
In this task, you will engage in a Sentinel City Community Health Simulation, a virtual city representing what you may find in any actual United States city. You will be able to take a virtual bus trip and a walk around the city while observing the environment and people of Sentinel City. Through your observations, you will gather information to assess potential health issues and risks within this online virtual learning environment.
You will assess different factors that may contribute to or detract from the health and wellness of the community and its citizens. During your trips through the city, you may be asked to describe the people you see and any expected or unexpected findings related to the citizens of Sentinel City. Your keen observations in this simulation will be the foundation to successfully completing assignments within your course. Record your observations of Sentinel City in preparation for this task.
The link to the Sentinel City Community Health Simulation is located in the course materials, Unit 4. Please review the “Overview Video of Sentinel City Simulation” and “Quick Start Guide” in Unit 4 before beginning the simulation.
You will need to use the “Demographics Assessment,” “Neighborhood Safety Inventory,” “Windshield Survey,” and “Population Health Scavenger Hunt” exercises, attached below, to complete part B of this task.

Part B
The virtual community’s health needs and risks in Sentinel City vary depending on the demographics, neighborhood and safety, and scavenger hunt assessment tools.
Demographics
8% of Sentinel City children who feed from public funds may be at a high risk of various health-related issues. People living in poverty had a high probability of experiencing food insecurity, lack of access to healthcare and preventative services, and lack of access to healthy foods and meals. Additionally, economically disadvantaged individuals often have high chronic disease rates like heart conditions, diabetes, and obesity.
Neighborhood and Safety
The neighborhood's safety also plays a role in the health needs and risks of the virtual community in Sentinel City. Those living in areas with high crime rates within Sentinel experience high levels of stress and anxiety, leading to difficulty sleeping, poor mental health, and even physical health issues. Additionally, those residing in unsafe neighborhoods had a high risk for significant air and water pollution levels, leading to respiratory illnesses, skin conditions, and other health issues.
Scavenger Hunt Assessment Tool
The Scavenger Hunt Assessment Tool was the other model used to evaluate the health needs and risks of the virtual community in Sentinel City. This tool offered insight into the availability of healthy food options, access to health care and preventative services, and the quality of the physical environment. For example, the tool would identify if there were any areas in the city with high levels of air and water pollution or if there were areas that lacked access to basic amenities such as grocery stores or healthcare centers.
The virtual community of Sentinel City is an example of a population that faces unique health needs and risks due to its fantastic makeup and characteristics. In particular, 8% of Sentinel City's children are fed from public funds. This instance represents a significant portion of the city's population, indicating that many children encounter food insecurity and other health risks associated with poverty.
Windshield Survey" Model
Using the above model, I assessed the health needs and risks of the virtual community in Sentinel City. This model seeks to identify a population's physical and social characteristics and determine how these characteristics impact the population's health. It is an effective tool for assessing the health needs of people because it allows researchers to observe and record data about a population as a whole rather than focusing on individuals.
The survey of Sentinel City revealed a variety of health needs and risks. For example, it found that overcrowding, poor sanitation, and limited access to health care were significant issues in the city. Additionally, the survey revealed that the city's high poverty rate had resulted in inadequate nutrition and health care for many of its children. This lack of adequate food and health care was further compounded by the fact that 8% of the city's children were fed from public funds.
The findings from the windshield survey of Sentinel City indicate that the population faces signif...
