One of the critical element that has helped me in my development as a nurse is my nursing philosophy. My philosophy was largely developed from the Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory. It has been the driving force that motivates, helps and give me the passion and strength to face many challenges that I pass through in my nursing course.

The nursing metaparadigm concepts are nursing, person or client, health and environment as seen in Alligood, M. R. (2014). Dorothea Orem’s theory defines nursing as an art, helping service and technology performed by nurses to individuals or environment to help them regulate or maintain their health. Nursing to me is a science, a practice or skill that is employed to facilitate or maintain good health of individuals or the community in general. It covers aspects such as controlling, preventing and treating a disease. Thus plays a greater role in ensuring good health of individual and the society in general.
Health is defined in the Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory as when a living thing is structurally and functionally whole or sound (American Psychological Association). The theory defines health with respect to living things being in normal or good condition, this undermines the environment which plays a task in our good health. In other words a healthy individual as to dwell in a healthy environment. Saying a healthy environment I mean environment that does on pose us to unhealthy condition. The environment can put you at a risk of contracting a disease. Thus to me health is the aspect of individual being sound and at sound environment.
Person as per the theory is the human being or group of individuals with health related problem that render them dependent on another person for care (Alligood, M. R. (2014)).
